34th Sketchcrawl - Austin

Last Saturday was the 34th Sketchcrawl. I went for a solo crawl.

I chose to crawl around my neighbourhood for the first half of the day. Above is a Tex-Mex restaurant called El Charrito.

This building sits adjacent to El Charrito. It is a Vehicle Inspection office that issues stickers.

The above is another Tex-Mex restaurant called Tres Amigos which is just across the highway 290-E.

During the later half of the day, I went to Downtown and sketched two views. The one below is Hilton Garden Inn.

Over the Labor Day Weekend, we went to Blanco, Tx. We spent half a day at the Blanco State Park. While returning back, we stopped over at a store that sells one of the best Peach Ice Cream.They also sell tomatoes, peaches and okra. The strore is in the same compound as the Hill Country Lavender Store.

Next, I went to Highland Mall to get my cell phone repaired. Highland Mall is now almost a ghost mall, with fewer shops left open. Most of the major retailers like Macy's, Dillards and JC Penny have long closed shop here. The above is a sketch of the fountain inside the mall.

Close to the fountain is a carousal.

Lastly, a sketch of a Crepe Myrtle tree in front of my apartment.

Last Saturday was the day of the 32nd Sketchcrawl. At this time of the year, Austin is always reeling under high temperatures. Last Saturday was no exception. It was 104 degrees and not a pleasant day to sit outside and sketch.

Anyway, I did not want to skip this Sketchcrawl. The above picture is a sketch of Whataburger Restaurant, close to my home.

Close to Whataburger is La Palapa - a tex-mex restaurant. La Palapa has some very good food. But, I skipped the food this time.

This Sketchcrawl, I spent at the Congress Building in Downtown Austin. It was a hot afternoon and there was the usual crowd in the Congress building. I did not enter the building. I sat at the lawns and sketched.

I walked a bit on Congress Avenue. But ended up with just one sketch of a traffic light.

A Warm Welcome to 2011

I have never begun a year with resolutions. But I would like to see some changes in me. I have been doing Dr. Bates Eye Exercises since the last year. I have been fairly regular in doing palming for eyes, which I find to be very beneficial. I do two 20 minute sessions each day. Thanks to a blog post by Michael Nobbs, I got into the 20 minute session.

I would like to see myself get less angry and less frustrated.

I feel I spend way too much time browsing the internet everyday. I keep hopping from one art blog to another and end up spending too much time on browsing. I would like to reduce my browsing time.

In general, I would also like to be more positive, more content, more at peace and have good will towards all situations and people that I encounter. Pretty lofty wishes......lets see how much progress I make. I am already down on the browsing part. I have spent a long time this morning hopping on the cyber highway.

Last December, in a momentary fit of insanity, I purchased a bright yellow jacket from Old Navy. I was looking for a jacket with a thick lining inside. I also noticed that I wear pale colored clothes often. I wanted something bright, what with winter bringing in a lot of grey around. Anyway, I would'nt say I dislike the color, but for a person who hides behind dull colored clothes, this one stands out as being very bright.

I found some oak acorns on a walk last week, when the weather was still warm and the met guys were talking of Austin's record high temperatures in November. It all changed this week. Austin in in for some cooler temperatures and its time to pull out jackets and thermals.

There is a group of Crepe Myrtle trees right outside my apartment and I have been watching nature's colorful drama unfold in the last few weeks. The Crepe Myrtle tree is very colorful all along summer too with its bright bouncing blooms.

Lake Bastrop is a little away from Bastrop State Park. It is privately owned and has cabins and camp sites. It is maintained well and we enjoyed a relaxed evening at the Lake.

A couple of weeks age, we visited Batsrop State Park on a week-end. It is conveniently located at a 45 minute drive from Austin. Bastrop State Park is home to the Lost Pine Forests of Texas. We stopped by at Elgin to pick up a box of Pizza which we ate while enjoying the scenic park.

Turk's cap are in sight in several places in and around Austin. These flowers resemble a mini hibiscus. They also go by the name Sleeping Hibiscus.

After my disastrous building and window sketches, I settled to draw some greenery. The bald cypress trees are slowly changing colors.

Those large granite rocks were comfortable to sit and sketch.

With that, I packed up to move home. I was glad to have spent some time in this Sketchcrawl.

I went around noon to Downtown Austin for the 29th Sketchcrawl. It was a beautiful day. We are out of Austin's brutal harsh summer days.

The building on the left is the Frost Bank Tower. The ornage building is not so orange in real. That was the only orange I had in my Derwent Watercolor Pencil set and so I gave the building an ugly dose of color.

I was so fed-up of drawing windows that I decided to move away from the place and do something else. I was, however in no mood to draw people.

This is one of Downtown Austin's swamky condominiums. Phew, thankfully not too many windows.

This month VPO is taking place in the beautiful Mexican city of San Miguel De Allende. After spending some time roaming around the city, I settled to sketch a window. I am not confident of drawing clean and good perspectives. This being a city where every home has beautiful doors and windows, I settled on this sketch.

Last weekend, we visited Enchanted Rock and en route we stopped at Fredericksburg for dinner. Downtown Fredericksburg is a live and happening place. But we could spend just a few hours there. There are old world buildings and boutiques lined up with live bands and restaurants. I spotted this beautiful flower pot and it ended up in sketch book.

Since last week, Fall weather is back in Austin, giving us respite from the scorching summer heat. We made a day trip to Enchanted Rock near Fredricksburg, Tx. It was an unplanned visit and we decided to make the trip when we saw how beautiful the weather had turned. Driving through Dripping Springs and Johnson City, we stopped by at some way-side shops that sell local peaches and vegetables.

Looking at the huge pink granite rock, I thought how on earth am I going to climb this place. Both me and TH are moderately active and walk 3 miles everyday. We began our climb at 5.00 pm and were up at 5.30 pm - that easy. Anyone who is moderately active and does not have knee and joint issues can make it to the top. Once up, we took time to just sit and soak into miles and miles of beauty and greenery of the sorroundings. It was a breezy day and there was a lot of cloud cover.

With Lake Austin snaking its way through most of Downtown Austin, it is common to bump into a bridge. Loop 360 bridge is one such . A couple of weeks back, we went over to sit at the banks of the lake and just enjoy the passing boats. There are few benches near the boat ramp. If you do'nt find one, be careful while sitting on the grass, cause there are large armies of Fire ants and you would not want to end up jumping into the lake to get away from these fiery ants.

One of the attractions in downtown Austin is the Bat bridge or Ann Richards Bridge. Every weekend, I go for a walk along the shores of Lady Bird Lake. At this time of the year, the twilight sky is very dramatic. There are hordes of visitors and residents who come over during twilight to watch the flight of hundreds of bats that reside under the bridge. When the bats emerge from their homes, it looks like black smoke. I prefer watching the bats sitting in one of the piers along the lake.

Sketches from trip to Grand Canyon - 3

On the second day of our trip, we drove to Grand Canyon from Flagstaff. My first sight of the Canyon was breath-taking. We stood still at many spots, to gaze at this marvellous piece of sculpture that nature had been working on since ages. Lunch was at the GC Village where we had a quick sandwich. As we drove towards the Eastern Rim, we stopped at many places.

The colors and the depth of the Canyon are mesmerizing. My sketches do no justice to its beauty.

Our final halt was the Desert View Tower from where we watched the sun set over the gorgeous Canyon and then drove back to Flagstaff.

The next morning we drove back to Phoenix to catch our flight back home to Austin, TX.

A visit to the Grand Canyon is like a pilgrimage to nature's temple. No wonder, the Native Americans considered the Canyon as sacred.

From Sedona, we drove to Flagstaff where we halted for the night. Late in the evening, we visited Lowell Observatory to view Saturn. Flagstaff is a beautiful town and being on a higher elevation, the vegetation is so different from the desert of Phoenix.

Pines, Aspens and other high-altitiude trees occupy the town.

The San Francisco Peaks offer an impressive sight from anywhere in Flagstaff.

Sketches from trip to Grand Canyon - 1

During the Memorial Day weekend, we went on a trip to the Grand Canyon. We flew to Phoenix, AZ and drove to Sedona, AZ. The large Saguaro Cactus that grows around Phoenix was something I have not seen anywhere before.

The drive to Sedona was delayed by more than an hour by a road accident and we got to feel the heat of the desert in full swing. The red rocks sorrounding Sedona has a very calming effect on me. We stopped at Red Rock State Park, which we could have avoided. Instead we should have gone to Oak Creek to see the Cathedral Rocks and spend time at the energy Vortex sites. My research on Sedona was very limited and we missed these important places. We stopped by all along the route to take pictures of the Red Rocks and to gaze at the sorrounding landscape.

The Alchemist is the first book that I read of Paulo Coelho. I was so impressed by Paulo's writing style and his constant reminder throughout the book that dreams can be acheived. I do not read much, but have managed to read other books of Paulo.

I spent a humid and hot Saturday at the University of Texas (UT) campus. There were some events taking place in the Downtown area and getting a place to park my car was an issue.

This is a statue of the Texas Longhorn in the campus.

The second picture is the Center for American Studies, also known as Arno Nowotny Building.

The last picture is John Hargis Hall which I think is used as an administrative building.

There are a lot of songs that I keep listening to again and again. One from my favorites list is Charlie Pride's Burgers and fries and cherry pies.

The first few lines run like this:

Summer is right around the corner. Austin is having it's sunny days and it is time to make some Lime preserves. I got a bag of Florida Key Limes and cut them up. Threw in some salt, turmeric and mustard powder. They are now basking in the sun in a jar. I will leave them for a month in the sun and hopefully, they will be ready to be eaten.

I planted this Golden Pothos sometime last year from a piece of cutting that I found in a mall. The plant must have been trimmed and someone forgot to clean up the place. It had only two leaves then. It took months to sprout a new leaf. Ever since then, the flexible vine has been growing well. Sometimes, I leave the pot outside in the sun. But most of the time, I leave it near a window sill. This plant does not require full sun and once a week watering is sufficient.

Foot corns are annoying especially, if you are a walker or runner. I have foot corn on my last toe and in between the last two toes. On both my feet they are at the same spot. I love walking. But these corns get painful with my shoes. I tried the corn removers, but they worked on some of the corns and not on some. Anyway, I shall continue to walk, corn or not. Cause walking long distances is the only physical activity that I am currently on. I somehow hate going to the gym. It maybe because of my preference for fresh air and sunlight.

Last weekend, I visited McKinney Falls. It is so close to Austin, that it would be a shame if I do not get to visit the place. The falls was not as impressive as Padernales. I wondered what the falls would be like in a year with low rains. This year, the rains have been pretty good and yet there was not much water in McKinney. But the wildflower display was fantastic. Lots of Coreopsis, Indian Paintbrush and Indian Blanket.

Eeyore's Birthday Sketch

Eeyore's Birthday was celebrated in Austin's Zilker Park on April 24, 2010. This was my first time at the event. It turned out to be a hippie party. There were lots of young and old hippies, swirling around in colorful clothes. There were large groups of hippies dancing to the beat of drums and chilling out with a mug of beer. Well, Austin is a free-spirited town and Austinites are a kind lot. Cause they have been so thoughtful to give the poor depressed donkey such a colorful party.

Austin hosted a Kite Festival in March. This is a sketch from the festival, which I am posting late. The festival was a fun way to invite Spring. Lots and lots of kites flying up in Downtown Zilker Park.

Bluebonnets at Willow City Loop, Tx

Last weekend, we visited Willow City Loop, TX to view the flowering Bluebonnets. This is my first time to this part of the world. I have been hearing from people that this year there is one of the most spectacular blooms of wildflowers in Texas. The cold winter coupled with good rains in February has been very conducive to this years wildflower season. To see fields of Bluebonnets interspersed with the lovely Orange colored Indian Paintbrush and bright yellow Groundsel is a visual treat. While driving around Austin too, I find the sides of highways filled with these colorful beauties. It is time to thank the vision of Lady Bird Johnson.

This month location for Virtual Paintout is in Canary Islands, Spain. I tool a long time going round and round the island to decide what I could sketch. It has been more than a month since I have done any sketching at all. It looks like I was suddenly frozen by some other things that were bothering me way beyond any importance they deserve. But, I am glad I got around to doing some sketching.

This was indeed a challenge. I put off doing this for sometime. One reason was my closet is not an organized one. My head went into a spin when I looked around wondering how I could make a sketch of such a closet. Then, it struck me that I could start some spring cleaning and re-organize things to make it easy for me to sketch. I picked some stuff and left some out and was glad that I ended up cleaning my closet and finishing this challenge.

I could not join the main group of Sketch Crawlers in Austin, Tx. Post noon I was free to do some sketching and decided to crawl around the neighborhood. Just then, I remembered I had to finish some chores near China Town. I did one sketch of the arch-way in Chinatown.

Once my chores were done, I was not sure where I could do the next sketch. I wandered around in my car and stopped by at this little family owned Mexican restaurant on Cameron Road. It was the color of the exteriors that caught my eye.
